With just little time left for the NE monsoon to make its presence felt in the state of Tamil Nadu, WRD or water resources department has taken an important decision now.

In and around Chennai this week, WRD would be starting the flood mitigation works. In the year 2021 during the NE monsoon season, several areas in Chennai got affected badly with water entering inside the houses etc. There was water stagnation also and it created lots of problems for the residents. It is revealed now that the mitigation works would be focussed on these vulnerable areas in Chennai.

According to a senior officer belonging to WRD, the vulnerable areas that were affected by the NE monsoons have been identified and depending on the allotment of funds flood mitigation work would be carried out in major water bodies. The water bodies include Buckingham Canal, Adyar River, Cooum River and Kosasthalaiyar River etc.

Several works like de-silting, replacing pipe culverts, building drains etc would be done by WRD soon. It is learnt that WRD has removed encroachments on the water-bodies.

As a part of flood mitigation work, if any encroachment gets spotted near the lake then they would be removed. Point is that due to lack of funds allotted by the TN government WRD would be able to carry out the mitigation works except in the affected areas in the Chennai city.

It was later explained by another official from WRD that an amount of Rs 250 crores has been allotted for widening of Kosasthalaiyar River and Adyar River and for bund strengthening works, desilting, SWD construction etc. No funds have been allotted for the rest of the work on these water bodies in Chennai. It is learnt that the total allotted cost for the project is Rs 20 crores and it would be carried out in the districts like Chennai and Cuddalore.
