The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the 3rd and 4th railway lines between Gummidipundi in Tamil Nadu and Gudur in Andhra Pradesh. The 90-km project will cost around ₹2,229 crore and is targeted for completion by 2030-31.

The project will increase railway capacity on the busy Chennai-Gudur route, which is part of the Delhi-Chennai and Howrah-Chennai trunk routes. Gummidipundi is an important suburban railway point for Chennai commuters, while Gudur connects Chennai with Vijayawada and Renigunta.

The additional lines are expected to support more train services, reduce congestion and improve daily travel for passengers. The project will also strengthen rail connectivity to Kamarajar (Ennore) Port and Krishnapatnam Port.

The railway project is expected to generate around 61 lakh mandays of employment and save nearly ₹382.15 crore annually in logistics costs.

It will also improve access to destinations such as Pulicat Lake, Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary and Lord Veeraraghava Perumal Temple.

Overall, the new railway lines are expected to give a major boost to passenger travel, freight movement and economic activity between Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
