Chennai Egmore Railway Station Marks 118 Years of Service

Chennai: Chennai Egmore Railway Station completed 118 years of service, and railway officials celebrated the occasion on Thursday by cutting a cake and distributing it to passengers.

One of the oldest railway stations in Chennai, Egmore Station has been in operation since 1908. The station building is designed in the Indo-Saracenic architectural style. The front structure of the station is a two-storey building, stretching about 500 feet in length and 71 feet in width. The station also has historical significance as the Boat Mail train was first operated from here.

At present, the Chennai Egmore Railway Station is undergoing renovation work at an estimated cost of ₹842 crore. The redevelopment includes new entry points and a new foot overbridge, along with modern airport-like infrastructure facilities. A state-of-the-art multi-level vehicle parking facility has also recently been made operational within the station premises.
