Chennai Corporation Starts Training for India Census 2027

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has begun preparations for the India Census 2027 with a three-day training programme for officials at the Ripon Building complex in Chennai.

The session was held on Monday at the Amma Maaligai conference hall in the presence of Sundaresh Babu, Director of the Directorate of Census Operations (DCO), Tamil Nadu, along with GCC Commissioner and Principal Census Officer G.S. Sameeran.

As part of the training, master trainers were appointed for senior GCC officials, including deputy commissioners, city revenue officers, additional city revenue officers, zonal assistant commissioners, and chief revenue officers. These trainers will later conduct sessions for enumerators and supervisors who will be involved in the census work on the ground.

Officials said the training programme, being held from May 25 to 27, is focused on improving accuracy, smooth coordination, and efficient data collection during the census process.

Census 2027 to Happen in Two Phases

According to the Directorate of Census Operations, Tamil Nadu, the Census 2027 exercise will be carried out in two separate phases.

First Phase: House Listing and Housing Operations

The first phase will cover house listing and housing-related information.

Residents will get an option to complete self-enumeration online from July 17 to July 31. After this, the official House Listing Operation (HLO) will be conducted from August 1 to August 30 through field visits.

During this stage, officials will collect details about households, housing conditions, and basic facilities available in homes.

Online Self-Enumeration Option for Residents

The government is also introducing a self-enumeration system through a secure online portal. People can upload their family details online before enumerators begin door-to-door visits.

Once the details are submitted successfully, residents will receive a unique Self-Enumeration Identity Number (SE ID). This number must be shared with the census official visiting the house for verification.

Population Enumeration Scheduled for February 2027

The second phase, called Population Enumeration (PE), is scheduled for February 2027.

Before fieldwork starts, residents will once again be given an optional 15-day online self-enumeration window to submit their details digitally.

Officials said nearly 11,000 enumerators and supervisors will be deployed to carry out the census process across Chennai.

The government has already released a detailed questionnaire containing 33 questions for the first phase of the census. Authorities believe the ongoing training sessions will help ensure the process is carried out smoothly and accurately across the city.
