Chennai Metro's Koyambedu - Alandur Phase II Stretch Delayed, Opening Expected in 2027

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has delayed the opening of the Koyambedu–Alandur stretch of its Phase II project, with operations now expected to begin in early 2027 instead of the earlier target of mid-2026.

According to CMRL officials, the delay was mainly caused by a shortage of workers and construction challenges, including utility shifting and restricted night-time work. However, the project has now gained momentum, with the viaduct nearly completed, around 16 km of track laid, and overhead electrical installation in progress.

Civil works are expected to be completed by October 2026, after which trial runs, signalling installation, safety inspections, and regulatory approvals will be carried out before the corridor is opened to the public.
Once operational, the Koyambedu–Alandur corridor will provide seamless interchange with the existing Phase I Metro network at Koyambedu, Vadapalani, and Alandur, significantly improving connectivity across Chennai.
