IIT Madras, FaMe TN Partner to Boost AI and Digital Transformation Among Tamil Nadu MSMEs

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has partnered with FaMe TN (Bureau for Facilitating MSMEs) to accelerate artificial intelligence adoption, digital transformation and technology capability building among Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across Tamil Nadu.

The collaboration will be led by the Centre of Tech Excellence at IIT Madras, with support from a CSR grant provided by Walmart Global Tech.

The initiative will focus on digitally empowering MSMEs operating in manufacturing, retail and allied sectors by making advanced technologies more accessible and practical for smaller businesses.

Low-Cost Digital and AI Solutions for MSMEs

A key focus of the partnership will be the development and adoption of low-cost, user-friendly and scalable digital solutions.

These technologies are intended to help MSMEs improve their operations without requiring significant capital investment, making AI and Industry 4.0 tools more accessible to small and medium businesses.

An MoU formalising the collaboration has been signed between IIT Madras and FaMe TN.

Tamil Nadu MSME Digital Readiness Index

One of the major outcomes planned under the initiative is a State-level MSME Digital Readiness and Adoption Index.

The index will assess the digital maturity of MSMEs across Tamil Nadu and help identify areas where businesses require technology upgrades, training and implementation support.

The initiative will promote AI, digital transformation and Industry 4.0 adoption through digital readiness assessments, capacity-building programmes, technology demonstrations and implementation assistance.

Focus on AI and Industry 4.0 Adoption

The collaboration also aims to support the development, technology transfer and large-scale deployment of indigenous digital solutions.

A government-academia-industry innovation ecosystem will be established around the Centre of Tech Excellence at IIT Madras to connect MSMEs with technology expertise and practical solutions.

The programme will focus on integrating AI-enabled workflows, shop-floor digitisation and Industry 4.0 technologies into the day-to-day operations of MSMEs in Tamil Nadu.

Boosting Productivity and Global Competitiveness

According to IIT Madras, the initiative will prioritise practical technologies and on-ground implementation that can directly benefit MSMEs.

The programme is expected to help businesses improve productivity, enhance product quality and strengthen global competitiveness, particularly in sectors such as automotive, engineering and fabrication.

By combining academic expertise, government support and industry participation, the IIT Madras-FaMe TN partnership aims to accelerate technology adoption and strengthen the digitatal capabilities of Tamil Nadu`s MSME sector.
