Tamil Nadu Government Allocates ₹86.94 Crore for Rural School Cleaning

The Tamil Nadu government has sanctioned ₹86.94 crore for maintaining toilets and cleaning classrooms and school premises in rural government schools across the state during the current academic year.

According to an order issued by the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department, around 33,000 government schools, covering primary, middle, high and higher secondary levels, are located in rural areas within panchayat limits.

The allocation will cover the period from June 2026 to April 2027. The funds will be used for the maintenance of school toilets, cleaning classrooms and keeping the overall school premises clean.

₹7.90 Crore Required Every Month

Prashant M Wadnere, Secretary to the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department, said the government has allocated ₹86.94 crore for sanitation and cleaning activities in rural government schools during the academic year.

The funds will cover the cost of cleaning materials and wages for sanitation workers involved in maintaining the schools.

According to the department, the monthly expenditure required for sanitation staff wages and the purchase of cleaning materials is estimated at around ₹7.90 crore.

Focus on Clean and Hygienic School Environment

The initiative aims to ensure that students studying in rural government schools have access to clean and hygienic classrooms, toilets and school premises throughout the academic year.

Regular cleaning and proper maintenance of school toilets and surroundings are expected to improve sanitation standards and provide students with a healthier learning environment.

The government has allocated the funds for the entire academic year, from June 2026 to April 2027, to support continuous sanitation and cleaning activities in government schools located within panchayat areas.
