IIT Madras Plans to Introduce MBBS and MD Medical Programmes

IIT Madras is planning to introduce medical education programmes, including MBBS and MD courses, as part of its efforts to bring medicine and engineering closer together and develop advanced healthcare technologies.

IIT Madras Director Prof. V Kamakoti said the institute is planning to establish its own medical college and teaching hospital to support the proposed programmes. The institute also plans to seek the required approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC) before starting the medical courses.

MBBS, MD and PhD Programmes Planned

The proposed medical education initiative is expected to include:

- Undergraduate MBBS programme

- Postgraduate MD programmes

- Research-oriented PhD programmes

The plan is aimed at creating an academic ecosystem where medical sciences, engineering and technology can work together to develop innovative solutions for modern healthcare.

IIT Madras Already Offers Medical Science Programme

IIT Madras established its Department of Medical Sciences and Technology in 2023. The department is already offering a four-year BS programme in Medical Sciences and Engineering.

The proposed expansion into medical education would further strengthen the institute`s focus on combining medical knowledge with engineering and technological research.

Teaching Hospital and Medical Campus Planned

To introduce MBBS and other medical programmes, IIT Madras plans to establish its own teaching hospital and medical college infrastructure. The hospital would provide clinical training facilities for students while also supporting medical research and technology development.

The institute will need to obtain the necessary National Medical Commission (NMC) approval before launching the proposed medical programmes.

Combining Medicine and Engineering

The initiative is expected to provide opportunities for collaboration between doctors, engineers, researchers and technology experts. By combining medical sciences with engineering, IIT Madras aims to contribute to the development of advanced healthcare technologies and innovative medical solutions.

The proposed MBBS, MD and PhD programmes could further expand IIT Madras`s role in medical education, healthcare research and technology-driven innovation.
