The Union Health Ministry has announced that cough syrups will soon be sold only with a doctor’s prescription, following the deaths of more than 25 children due to adulterated cough medicine.
At present, cough syrups can be sold without a licence to distribute medicines. Under the new regulations, the Ministry will restrict the sale of cough syrups exclusively to licensed drug stores and only upon presenting a valid prescription.
The decision comes after over 25 children in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan died from kidney failure caused by consuming Coldrif, a cough syrup found to be contaminated with toxic chemicals. The tragic incident has sparked widespread concern and prompted the government to tighten safety rules for over-the-counter medicines.
