Chennai Airport–Kathipara Corridor to Get ₹10.5 Crore ‘Gateway of Chennai’ Makeover

The drive between Kathipara and Chennai Airport is set for a major transformation, with the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) planning to spend more than ₹10.5 crore to develop the corridor as the ‘Gateway of Chennai’.

The initiative aims to create an attractive and welcoming first impression for travellers entering Chennai through the airport, while also improving pedestrian infrastructure, landscaping and public spaces along the key corridor.

GCC Splits Project into Two Packages

The Gateway of Chennai project has been divided into two major packages. Around ₹5.65 crore has been allocated for upgrading the airport-to-Kathipara corridor, while ₹4.92 crore has been earmarked for redeveloping the existing VIP Park along the stretch.

GCC Commissioner GS Sameeran said the initiative would go beyond conventional beautification and landscaping. The project is intended to introduce thematic elements reflecting the history and identity of Chennai and Tamil Nadu while creating improved public spaces.

Airport Approach to Get Major Upgrade

As part of the makeover, GCC plans to remove damaged pavements, kerbs, barricades, unwanted vegetation and obsolete RCC and concrete structures along the airport approach.

Utility shifting, traffic diversions and barricading will be carried out before the redevelopment begins.

The upgraded corridor will feature improved footpaths, wider pedestrian areas, avenue plantations, ornamental shrubs, landscaped lawns and dedicated irrigation systems. Decorative lighting, street furniture, signage and thematic installations highlighting Chennai’s heritage are also planned.

New Identity for Chennai Airport Gateway

Unlike some other major cities where airport boulevards create a distinct arrival experience, Chennai currently transitions quickly between the highway and airport without a prominent thematic identity.

The Gateway of Chennai initiative seeks to change this by creating pedestrian-friendly and green corridors along with decorative illumination on footpaths and at the three entry and exit points of the airport approach.

The improvements are expected to give travellers a stronger visual introduction to Chennai as they enter or leave the airport.

VIP Park Near Chennai Airport to Be Redeveloped

A nearly one-acre site near the airport’s VIP gate will be transformed into a redesigned VIP Park. Another GCC park, located around 500 metres away near an underground bridge, will also form part of the larger Gateway of Chennai initiative.

The VIP Park redevelopment includes dismantling existing RCC structures and removing old flooring and masonry. The police booth near Nanganallur signal, close to the VIP gate, will be relocated, while electrical poles will be shifted wherever necessary.

Scrub vegetation, inclcluding growth beneath the flyover, will also be cleared.

The redesigned park will feature landscaped gardens, lawns, ornamental plants, paved walkways, benches, sculptures, railings, bollard lighting, decorative landscape lights, information signage and a dedicated irrigation network.

Nanganallur Signal Area to Be Improved

GCC also plans to improve the surroundings of Nanganallur signal as part of the project.

Two dilapidated public toilets in the area will be taken up under the improvement works. Seized vehicles and metal scrap currently occupying portions of the site will also be removed to create a cleaner and more presentable environment.

Project to Be Completed in Four Months

The selected contractor will have four months to complete the Gateway of Chennai works. The contractor will also be responsible for comprehensive operation and maintenance of the developed infrastructure for the following three years.

Once completed, the project is expected to transform the Kathipara Chennai Airport corridor with better pedestrian infrastructure, greenery, lighting and heritage-themed installations, creating a distinctive gateway for visitors arriving in the city.
