Chennai Rain Forecast: Evening Showers Likely as Widespread Rain Expected Across Western Ghats

Chennai is likely to experience spells of rain on Friday evening and during the night, while widespread southwest monsoon rainfall is expected across the Western Ghats and adjoining regions over the next two days, according to independent weather blogger Pradeep John.

Widespread Rain Expected Across the Western Ghats

Pradeep John said that Friday and Saturday are likely to be favourable for widespread southwest monsoon rainfall across the Western Ghats.

Rain is expected across Kerala and Karnataka, particularly in the Cauvery catchment areas, as well as the hilly regions of Tamil Nadu. In Tamil Nadu, Valparai, the Nilgiris, Theni, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari are among the areas likely to receive significant rainfall.

Rain May Improve Reservoir Inflows

The expected rainfall could improve water availability in catchment areas and increase inflows into reservoirs across the Western Ghats.

However, the showers may not be sufficient to offset the overall seasonal water deficit, as several catchment areas continue to face a substantial rainfall shortfall.

Below-Normal Rainfall Outlook for August

The rainfall outlook for the rest of August currently appears relatively subdued, with below-normal rainfall expected across many southwest monsoon catchment areas.

August is typically an important month for the southwest monsoon and contributes significantly to reservoir inflows in the Western Ghats. Following weaker rainfall in June, a below-normal August could further affect the overall performance of the southwest monsoon season.

Chennai May Get Rain Today

For Chennai, there is a good chance of fast-moving spells of rain later in the evening and into the night. Increasing moisture levels and passing convective clouds could bring showers to several parts of the city.

Residents are advised to monitor local weather conditions, especially while planning evening travel and outdoor activities.
