Police asks the banks to close the ATMs that do not have proper security

A woman was nearly beaten to death in an automated teller machine (ATM) kiosk in Bangalore. This incident had happened because there was lack of security. In Chennai, for example, the police have pointed out that 40% of the 4,200 ATMs in the city do not have the required security measures. Most ATM booths remain unguarded and many even lack a system to call out for assistance. While almost all ATM centres are fitted with closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras they do not seem to trigger an immediate response. "Most banks do not monitor their CCTV cameras or check the recordings even once a day," said a senior police officer. "Only if there is a robbery or an issue in a particular centre do they check," he added. "They do not even have a mechanism to check if their CCTV cameras are working regularly without a glitch."
Hence the police have requested the banks to close their ATMs which do not have proper security.
