Anna Centenary Library Transforms into Lending Library Starting March 12

The Anna Centenary Library (ACL) at Kotturpuram, initially established as a referral bibliotheca in September 2010, is set to begin lending books from March 12, marking a significant evolution in its services. Officials have intensified preparations, readying over one lakh books for lending in the initial phase.

To cater to the expected demand, books for lending will be segregated across different sections of the library. The children`s section on the first floor, the Tamil language section on the second, and fictional books on the fourth floor will be part of the initial lending phase. Plans are in place to gradually expand lending to books on other floors in the following weeks.

In the Tamil section alone, 80,000 to one lakh books have been earmarked for lending, while 10,000 books, excluding dictionaries and encyclopedias, will be placed in the children`s section. Additionally, officials have decided to lend 10,000 books in the English section during the first phase, focusing on titles with multiple copies and reasonable prices.

With this transition, ACL anticipates a surge in footfall, aiming to meet the increasing demand by deploying 6-8 librarians on each floor during working hours. A total of 62 librarians will be available, with provisions to hire additional staff on a contract basis if necessary.

Since the introduction of free Wi-Fi in early January, ACL has witnessed a rise in readership, with an average of 450 daily users. Membership applications have also soared, reaching nearly 5,500 individuals eager to benefit from the library`s evolving services.
