The woes of the Chennai residents regarding roads don`t seem to end!!

After having faced issues like potholes and crater ridden roads throughout the year, the Chennai residents are now facing issues regarding the re-laid roads.

It must be noted that these re-laid roads in several localities in Chennai are of poor quality, higher than the original road level. It is shocking to mention that many roads have been re-laid without mandatory milling also.

Many roads in places like Anna Nagar, Mogappair and Manapakkam etc in Chennai were atleast 40mm to 70mm higher than the original road level. Improper or no milling has been cited as the reason for this issue. It is well known that as per Indian Road Congress norms the bituminous concrete must be milled for 40mm depth and re-laid for the same level.

It is now said that the improper or no milling of the roads has led to margins becoming sharp and standing up to 70mm above the original level. This would result in huge risk for the vehicle users especially two wheelers. It has been found out that the Manapakkam Man Road is now 70mm higher than the original road.

It was explained by an IT employee in Manapakkam that a month back milling of Manapakkam High Road was done in a poor manner. He added that the road was re-laid 2 weeks back and after that the height of the road increased drastically. As a result, there are now many open spots and a sharp fall on both margins.

According to a resident from Anna Nagar, the contractors did not do road milling work properly. She spoke about how the contractors just scraped and scratched the road surface and called it milling work.

It was revealed by a Vyasarpadi resident that the road height was increased by 3.5 feet over 3 decades due to non-milling. He spoke about how the roads must last for 15 years but the roads last for just a few months only. The corporation has not only messed up with the road height but has also allowed compromise on the quality by not applying a strengthening course.
