When compared to Bangalore, the airport at Chennai handles more international flights per month. The total aircraft movement as well as the passenger numbers have come down now at the Chennai airport. Chennai airport now ranks 5th amongst all the metros in India. There would be IndiGoflights to Bahrain and Muscat from Chennai. After travel was revived in 2022, many international carriers have increased their  frequencies.

Next month, when the new international terminal opens at the Chennai airport, there will be more flights to the foreign countries. For international departures and arrivals, the new terminal would be used. This was according to Mr. Sharad Kumar, Chennai airport director. To make the baggage handling procedure faster, the airport at Chennai has roped in new ground handling companies. It is now brought out that the AAI has been pushing the Chennai airport to regain the edge it had on the passenger traffic in the past. In the future, more people will be using this airport.

The airport director explained that Airfrance would be increasing the flight frequency from 3 to 5 flights per week. In addition, AirArabia would also be increasing flights from 2 to 3 per week. It must be recalled in December 2022, Chennai airport handled 2819 international flights when compared to the 1037 flights it handled in the same period in 2022. In December 2022, Chennai airport handled 457436 international passengers and in December 2021 it handled 246387 international passengers.

It is worthy to note that at Chennai airport the passengers do not face hassles when compared to other major airports across India and the airspace is also free. Instead of landing at other airports, the passengers could travel to Chennai directly. In future, the airport at Chennai would be developed as a gateway airport. It must be noted that the Mumbai airport faces air traffic congestion. The airport at Chennai is placed in a better way to receive more international flights.

Developing Chennai airport as the foremost hub after Delhi and Mumbai airports has been the main objective and this was pointed out by the civil aviation minister Mr. Jyotiraditya Scindia. A huge amount of Rs 2000 crores would be invested by AAI. The airport`s capacity would be increased to 35 million passengers and 45 flights per hour. This would be done after constructing a new terminal by the end of 2024.
