The introduction of 20 additional buses by MTC in 12 highly congested routes in Chennai is making news now. It must be recalled that about a month back the CM of TN Mr. MK. Stalin directed the officials belonging to CUMTA or Chennai Unified Metropolitan  Transport Authority to ensure hassle free and safe commuting for the school and college students in Chennai.

In this scenario, MTC has introduced 20 additional buses in 12 highly congested routes in the city. It is learnt that these additional MTC buses would enhance the carrying capacity from 20000 students  to 22000 students per day from 8am to 9:30am..

A study was conducted by the officials from operations, planning and technical wing regarding the important routes in the city. In October 2022, 2 students died while hanging on to the MTC buses in Kolapakkam and Adyar etc and this grabbed many eyeballs. The study undertaken by the above said people were mainly due to the deaths of these 2 students in October.

According to a senior official from MTC, after the launching of additional MTC buses the footboard travel by the students have reduced significantly. He threw light on how the depot managers have associated with the select school management to deploy staffs  to regularise students while boarding the buses in Chennai. Measures are being taken by MTC now to stop footboard travelling of the students.

It is superb to note that the additional MTC services have increased the patronage of buses plying between Perambur- Egmore 29A, Kannagi Nagar- Velachery 5G, T.Nagar – Ambattur Industrial Estate 147. It is shocking to mention that out of a fleet strength of 3236 MTC buses about 30% do not have automatic doors. It is important to mention that MTC carries 32lakh passengers in a day.

The footboard travel in the express and deluxe buses has been relatively low when compared with that of ordinary white board MTC buses. This was according to an officer from MTC. He mentioned that it was not an easy task to fit automatic doors in the ordinary buses but the new MTC buses would have automatic doors.

A subsidy was received by MTC from the TN Govt for carrying about 4.5lakhs students in a day and this was until 2019. There is now no record available with MTC regarding the total number of students it has ferried. The school students in uniforms were allowed to travel free in the MTC buses is known.
