Commuting in Chennai has slowed down to a crawl now suddenly after intense rains?

The spells of intense rains in the last week in Chennai have turned the lives of the residents upside down now. Many motorists have been affected now. The rains have led to craters on the roads. It is known that there are as many as 34640 interior roads and 471 bus route roads in Chennai. The pre-monsoon survey conducted by GCC has revealed about the presence of craters on one third of the roads in Chennai. Now, it has become worse after the heavy rains in the city.
According to a resident from Anna Nagar, caters and pits have sprung up on several roads in Chennai now. The resident added that the 13th Main Road and 18th Main Road were re-laid just last year but these roads have holes and craters.
There are several roads in Chennai that have craters now and these are Arcot Road in Vadapalani, Ambattur Estate Road, Velachery-Tambaram Main Road, roads in Virugambakkam, Valasaravakkam, Kilpauk, Porur and Mandaveli etc.
It must be taken into account that the commute in Chennai has slowed down now to a crawl after the heavy rains. Yesterday afternoon in places like Koyambedu and Vadapalani etc the vehicular traffic stood still for more than a hour. According to a resident from Thiruvottiyur, the roads were unfit to commute even on normal days also but now (especially at nights) roads have become worse with potholes etc.
It must not be forgotten that in 2020-21 as many as 250 bus route roads and 4500 interior roads were re-laid by GCC. As many as 1650 Chennai roads were re-laid before the GCC Council elections in 2022. Truth is that GCCC has been spending money daily now on patching up work on these roads with wet mix. The residents want concrete roads in the flood prone localities in the city as this would reduce seasonal expenses on the roads.
