The issues regarding the new integrated terminal building at Chennai airport are making news?

By the end of 2022, a new integrated terminal building would be opened at the Chennai airport. Now, the airport and airline staff have raised concerns about this new integrated terminal building.

Mr. Sanjeev Kumar, chairman, AAI made his presence felt at Chennai airport on 15th and 16th of September 2022 and inspected the integrated terminal building and multi-level car parking etc. it is worthy to note that during inspection he saw facilities in both the buildings and gave his feedback to the airport authorities.

Few issues have come out ahead of the opening of the new integrated terminal building and it would be addressed. This was according to some sources at the Chennai airport. It is learnt that the terminal with delays was constructed in 2 phases. Truth is that the first phase would be completed by the end of 2022 and the international terminal would be moved there.

As per the source, when the terminal opens in December then just 3 aerobridges may be available. It must be noted that for those aircraft that do not have the aerobridge facility, the aircraft would have to be parked at remote bays and the passengers would have to be transported in buses. This could lead to lots of inconvenience for the passengers. It added that the remaining aerobridges would be available only after construction of the entire terminal gets completed. Point is that it could take atleast another year and AAI must find a temporary solution.

Another issue is that the number of check in counters would be less initially. In comparison with the 72 counters that are available in the existing international terminal, there might be just 60 checked in counters. An officer belonging to AAI explained that in December 7 aerobridges would be available and when the work gets over 17 aerobridges would be there.
