Know about these 5 new additions in places like Kodungaiyur, Koyambedu, Perungudi etc from CMWSSB in Chennai!!

By the end of 2022, the CMWSSB or Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board would be adding 5 sewage treatment plants or STP`s to its existing network. This has caught the attention now.
The new plants in places like Kodungaiyur, Koyambedu, Nesapakkam, Perungudi and other places would have a combined capacity to treat 350 million litres of water or MLD in a day. It is learnt that these new plants would be constructed with the latest sequential batch reactor technology to comply with the revised norms of CPCB or Central pollution Control Board.
According to an official belonging to CMWSSB, new facilities are being added to cater to the huge population in 2035. He hinted that the work has been completed in the STP in Thiruvottiyur and the facility has been under trials. By the month of December, other plants would also be ready as the work is going in full swing now.
It is a known fact that Chennai city generates 584mld sewage that is treated in several STP`s in Chennai. Point is that the existing 13 STPs including the STP at Sholinganallur have got a combined capacity to treat nearly 745mld. By the end of 2023, the metro water board wants to increase the treatment capacity to 1000 mld. Now, there is a huge need to improve the treatment facilities on par with septage collection on the outskirts.
It is worth mentioning that the new plants would be based on the latest technology which needs less space and generates reclaimed water of better quality. The quality of treated sewage let into the channels is determined by the biochemical oxygen and TDS or total suspended solids. These two would be reduced to less than 10mg per litres and 20 mg per litre respectively. The TDS level in the treated sewage is now less than 30 mg per litre.
The officials from CMWSSB highlighted that to plug sewage outfalls in various major water channels work is being carried out. To provide modular STPs and to treat sewage flowing into Adyar River and Cooum River, new pipelines and projects are being carried out.
