Happy news for the residents of Chennai!!

The capacity of Kattur and Thatamanji lakes would be increased to 350mcft from 58.27 mcft and it would be carried out at a cost of Rs 62.36 crores. This was mentioned by the WRD or water resources department. It must be taken into account that WRD is constructing a small reservoir on the Chennai outskirts for increasing water supply to Chennai city in the future.

By the month of August, the work on the above said 2 lakes would get over and this was as per as a senior officer belonging to WRD. He added that the lakes were being upgraded for recharging groundwater. This would prevent intrusion from seawater and water would be available for irrigation purposes. De-silting and bund strengthening works etc have been completed and it accounts for 80% of total works.

To help farming in the nearby areas, a check dam is also being built now and increased storage of these 2 lakes would be of huge benefit for more than 5000 acres of ayacut lands. There is a need for a small reservoir now and this was as per another officer belonging to WRD.

The reservoirs in Chennai have a capacity of 13.213mcft and demand was at 20 tmcft. By the year 2030, the demand would increase to 34tmcft. It is now said that small and medium water bodies present in and around Chennai would be used as drinking water sources. There would also be few more small reservoirs that would be created by WRD in the future.
