Shocking!! More climate changes and adverse weather conditions in Chennai in the coming days!!

Posted on: 22/Apr/2022 9:41:30 AM
From high temperatures to reduced rainfall along with cyclones etc, Chennai city has witnessed weather changes for many years!!

It must be noted that the weather vagaries was not only due to urban heat island effect but due to climate change also. Urban heat island effect would occur when the natural land cover gets replaced by dense concentration of pavements, buildings etc that absorb and retain heat.

Climate activists as well as naturalists now have sounded warning regarding Chennai and Tamil Nadu. The shocking piece of information is that in the future, there would be more climate changes and adverse weather conditions in Chennai city and in the state. This would be mainly due to the emission from various industries and vehicles etc. Today, 22nd April 2022 is observed as World Earth Day is known to us.

There has been a huge increase in the levels of pollution in the cities belonging to Tamil Nadu now and fuel burning emission from the industries and increasing traffic has been contributing to the pollution. This was according to some experts involved in climate change research and weather monitoring. They threw light on the weather changes pattern that has been witnessed in Chennai in the last 10 years.

The impact of climate change on the rainfall patterns was visible and would take place at slow speeds. This would leave the rainfall pattern to become erratic. This was according to Mr. S. Balachandran, deputy director general of meteorology, RMC, Chennai.

He spoke about how the weather pattern variation in TN was there reflecting on the atmospheric circulations and low pressures etc. He explained that during and post north east monsoons TN had witnessed huge reduction in the cyclonic activities over the Bay of Bengal between 1961 and 2010. It is noteworthy that cyclonic data is being studied for the current decade.

Weather blogger Pradeep John brought out that during the month of March the weather would be usually dry. On 29th March 2022, the highest maximum temperature was recorded in Karur with 40.5 degrees Celsius which was a steep increase.

He threw light on the fact that in the last 150 years just twice only in 1984 and in 2008 Tamil Nadu state experienced wet weather in March. It is worth mentioning here that not only rainfall but also the cyclonic activities would change if pollution and afforestation issues were not addressed. Truth is that just 10 depressions have formed over the last 130 years.
