In southern Chennai, Pallikaranai is an important residential locality with a huge population.
The large lake in Pallikaranai is Anai Eri and for more than a week water from this Eri has been flowing through streets in Anna Nagar, Dilli Babu Nagar, Ambal Nagar in Pallikaranai causing many problems for the residents.
It was brought out by a resident of Pallikaranai that water keeps on gushing continuously and due to this walking and riding 2- wheelers have been difficult. Reptiles like snakes have been entering many houses here.
He threw light on how the SWD in the streets is hardly sufficient to carry the volume of water that has been flowing. The water level reached 4 feet during and after the heavy rains and this has forced the residents to be inside their houses.
According to an environmental activist, though Anai Eri has been de-silted and restored with bunds there is no proper outlet channel. He then spoke about how if there was a water body then water would flow in as well as out of it. It is learnt that no guidelines have been followed for restoration.
A senior resident mentioned about the stagnant water behind his house in an open area. He hinted about the formation of a large and proper channel to carry water to Narayanapuram Lake.
It must be taken into account that GCC last year made a proposal to build a channel but it has not been implemented yet. Point is that the residents have requested GCC to build the channel as soon as possible.
