The total lockdown in Chennai has made the situation at the highly popular Koyambedu wholesale market worse. After the total lock down announced by the TN government, the sales here have gone down 50percent. Now, it is brought to light that every day more than 250 tonnes of vegetables are being thrown away due to the decrease in the sales. People have been finding it tough to get vegetables now in total lockdown is known.

This market at Koyambedu receives limited supply of vegetables in May month and the rates of veggies would usually be double than the usual. This was according to Mr. P. Sukumaran, treasurer, Koyambedu Vegetables Market Association. Just 450 trucks of vegetables are received by this market now. Retail traders were in huge numbers at this market before the total lock down and now their numbers have got reduced.

It is known that these retail traders constituted the majority of buyers at the market. It is now mentioned that those retail vendors who come to the market do not buy their usual amount due to the fear that they might not be able to sell the veggies now due to the total lock down. It is really shocking to note that every day atleast 250 to 300 tonnes of veggies go to waste.

It is learnt that the bio gas complex was using the waste to generate electricity but now this has been stopped. The vegetables now get dumped in the garbage. Currently, the prices of veggies have gone down by 10percent and the traders were worried that the situation might be there in the next month also due to the high number of Covid-19 cases.

The Chennai residents have started buying veggies online since the last lock down and this has been going on even now. This has affected many retail traders as their businesses have reduced in this second Coronavirus wave also just similar to how their businesses went down the first wave.

It was pointed out by a wholesale trader at Koyambedu market that onion is sold for Rs 20 per kg, tomatoes sold for Rs 25 per kg, potatoes for Rs 15 etc
