Slums in and around Cooum to be cleared

Posted on: 22/Aug/2015 9:48:56 AM
Chennai Corporation is likely to vacate about 14000 huts in Chennai owing to cleaning of Cooum river. The river was once a beautiful place in the city with boats floating here and there embellishing Chennai city. This is now a sewage dump ruining the entire beauty of the city. As there have been several pleas and requests for cleaning the Cooum river, the government is now taking serious efforts to clean it up in full swing.

As the first step, the Chennai Corporation is set to remove all the huts along Cooum and set up beautiful parks and pathways with advanced features.

Nearly 9 parks and pathways will be set up here for which about 14,257 huts will be removed from 35 slums and the unauthorized shops and kiosks will also be removed. These areas from where the slums will be cleared include Pallavan Nagar and Navalar Nedunjezhiyan Nagar.

In a recent meeting about this by Chennai Corporation and few other organizations, few requests were placed. It was requested that biometric studies should be made on residents of Perumbakkam and Ezhilnagar before changing the locality.

It is expected that the biometric study will take place along a stretch of 23.9 km encompassing the starting place of the Cooum, until Maduravoyil bypass. The restricting plan for Cooum river was proposed on knowing the methods to be followed as told by experts of environment restricting plans from the US and Singapore. Even before preparing the project report for it, the slums in nearby areas of the Cooum river are vacated. After a specific time period, these slums will be resettled again.
