Steep rise in onion price

The price of onion has touched an unprecedented high in the last 2 years in North India.

Onion prices shot up by Rs. 400/- to touch Rs. 4900/- per quintal in the largest onion market in the country in Lasalgaon.

As the harvest of onion has been delayed in the states of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan, the delay in the reduced quantity of onions arriving at the markets has caused the steep rise in price.

Another reason cited is the reduction in the quantity of harvest of onion in the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra.

Central government has taken an initiative to bring down the steep rice in onion price by importing 1000 tons of onion.

At the Chennai wholesale vegetable market in Koyambedu, the price of onion has shot up by Rs. 7/- per kg to be sold at Rs. 52/- per kg. In the retail market, onion is being sold at Rs. 60/- to Rs. 65/- per kg.
