Chennai Regional Passport Officer K Balamurugan in a statement has mentioned that the students who want to apply for passports need not submit original certificates.

In the statement he has mentioned,” The ministry of external affairs (MEA) has corrected its passport processing criteria for students. Addressing their difficulty in producing original documents such as birth certificate, secondary school certificate (SSC, class X) and other educational documents which are usually retained by their current educational institutes, the ministry has allowed students to submit a certificate from recognized educational institutions certifying that the applicant is studying there and the original certificates are retained by them.

The applicants should also produce photocopies of such documents duly attested by the educational institution along with a copy of an identity card issued by the institution. In case of any doubt about the genuineness of the certificate, passport authorities may conduct verification from the issuing authority.

The decision of the passport issuing authority will be final in such cases. This decision of the MEA is likely to benefit thousands of students who apply for passports in order to explore career and higher education prospects oversees. The passport applicants, as per existing passport rules, have to mandatorily produce all original documents such as birth certificate, SSC certificate, and other educational documents at the time of submission of their application.
