Tasmac prices set to increase from Wednesday onwards

Drinkers in Tamil Nadu have to pay more for their alcohol from today as liquor prices have been hiked in accordance to the recent state government decision to increase the upper ceiling on excise duty on liquor. As per the new rates, a quarter bottle (180ml) of regular and medium brand prices have gone up by Rs 10 while premium label prices have seen an increase of Rs 20. The new rates have come into effect exactly a week after the government took up a bill in the assembly to hike the excise duty on liquor.
The state government is expected to earn more than Rs 750 crore by hiking liquor rates, said a senior Tasmac official.
As many as 50 cases of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) are being sold each month across the state through Tasmac outlets that are under state government control. The government decided to increase the liquor rates as there was a dip in sales figures this year. According to government figures, total revenue from liquor sales was Rs 21,641 across the state in 2013-14 as against Rs 21,680.67 in the previous year.
