Chennai witnessed a sharp surge in outbound travel as over 2.13 lakh passengers left the city for their native places during the extended holiday period, according to the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation.

The increase in travel was driven by consecutive holidays, including May Day and Chitra Pournami, along with additional leave granted by government and private institutions. Compared to usual travel patterns, this year saw a noticeable rise in the number of people leaving Chennai.

To handle the heavy rush, transport authorities operated both regular and special bus services. A total of 2,092 regular buses were deployed, along with 1,784 additional special buses, taking the total to 3,876 buses. These services collectively facilitated the travel of 2,13,180 passengers.

The details were shared by Mohan, Managing Director of the State Express Transport Corporation. He stated that special buses were arranged to ensure smooth and comfortable travel for passengers during the holiday season.

Officials also confirmed that additional buses will continue to be operated based on passenger demand in the coming days. Authorities have advised travellers to plan their journeys in advance and make use of the special services to avoid last-minute inconvenience.

The holiday travel rush highlights the growing reliance on public transport systems in Tamil Nadu, especially during festival and long weekend periods.
