Tamil Nadu Weather Update: IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Heavy Rain on Feb 21 & 22

Posted on: 19/Feb/2026 3:48:34 PM

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Tamil Nadu, forecasting moderate to heavy rainfall in isolated places on February 21 and 22. According to weather officials, rainfall ranging between 7 cm and 11 cm is likely in some regions due to a developing low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.

A low-pressure area is expected to form over the southeast Bay of Bengal, which may move in a west-northwest direction. In addition, an upper-air cyclonic circulation prevailing over the region is likely to influence weather conditions across the state.

Light to moderate rain is expected in South Tamil Nadu, coastal districts, and the Puducherry and Karaikal regions. On February 21 and 22, several parts of Tamil Nadu may receive moderate rain with thunderstorms and isolated heavy showers, while the remaining districts could experience mostly dry weather.

In North Tamil Nadu, light fog is likely during early morning hours over the next two days. Chennai and suburban areas are expected to witness partly cloudy skies with mild morning mist. The maximum temperature is likely to remain around 30–31°C, while the minimum temperature may hover near 23°C.

Authorities have advised residents to stay alert and follow official weather updates, especially in areas that may receive heavy rainfall.
