Posted on: 14/Jan/2026 9:16:38 AM

Air pollution levels have increased significantly in Chennai and its suburbs following Bhogi festival celebrations. The highest Air Quality Index (AQI) of 196 was recorded in Gummidipoondi, indicating poor air quality.

As per the Central Pollution Control Board, no area in Chennai currently falls under the ‘Good’ air quality category. Pollution levels have continued to rise due to festival-related burning, industrial emissions, and stagnant weather conditions.

Chennai AQI Levels – Area-wise (7 AM Update)

Manali: 254 (Very Poor)

Arumbakkam: 210 (Poor)

Perungudi: 201 (Poor)

Kodungaiyur: 159 (Moderate)

Royapuram: 164 (Moderate)

Velachery: 163 (Moderate)

Cause of Pollution Spike

The rise in air pollution is mainly linked to Bhogi bonfires, burning of waste materials, and increased PM2.5 and PM10 emissions, along with industrial activity in northern Chennai.
