Chennai is facing growing concerns over waste management as the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) plans to phase out its micro composting centres (MCCs). The city now generates over 6,150 tonnes of waste daily, compared to around 5,000 tonnes in 2018. This rise is attributed to increased food delivery services, disposable packaging, and poor waste storage practices. Residents from areas like Ayanavaram, Anna Nagar, and Royapettah complain about irregular garbage collection, with bins often overflowing and waste remaining uncleared for over a day. The issue is further worsened by a shortage of conservancy staff, with over 1,000 positions vacant out of 9,563 sanctioned posts in zones directly managed by the GCC.
