Thousands of commuters faced delays on Friday morning after a signal failure near Tambaram railway station disrupted suburban electric train services on the busy Chengalpattu–Tambaram–Chennai Beach route.

According to railway officials, the signal fault affected EMU services operating between Chengalpattu and Chennai Beach via Tambaram. Several trains were halted at stations including Guduvanchery, Urapakkam, Vandalur and Perungalathur, causing inconvenience to passengers during peak morning hours.

Train services from Tambaram towards Chennai Beach were also delayed, while fast EMU services on the route witnessed disruptions due to the technical issue.

A total of eight suburban electric train services were affected by the signal failure.

Railway engineers from Tambaram attended to the fault and restored the signalling system within approximately 40 minutes. Following the repairs, normal train operations resumed on the section.

The disruption impacted office-goers, students and factory workers travelling from Chennai`s southern suburbs, leading to overcrowding and delays across the suburban rail network.
