Construction work on the long-awaited redevelopment of the Broadway bus terminus will commence on January 25, Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments and CMDA Chairman P.K. Sekarbabu announced on Sunday.
The foundation stone for the new Broadway bus terminus and the integrated multi-modal transport hub will be laid by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
As part of interim arrangements, a temporary bus stand at Royapuram will accommodate 55 buses and handle around 2,000 bus movements daily. Another temporary terminal at Island Grounds will park 34 buses at a time and is expected to manage similar commuter volumes. Both facilities will be equipped with standard amenities, including seating for persons with disabilities and breastfeeding rooms.
The Minister also reviewed the construction progress of the new exhibition centre being developed by CMDA at Island Grounds, which is planned as a modern venue for large-scale exhibitions and public events.
Other projects inspected under the North Chennai Development Plan include restoration work at Villivakkam Lake, construction of a new community hall at SIDCO Nagar at a cost of ₹6.75 crore, and two Urban Primary Health Centres coming up at Sembium (₹4.82 crore) and Somayya Raja Street (₹4.19 crore).
