Water Inflow to Chembarambakkam Lake Rises Sharply as Heavy Rains Continue Across Tamil Nadu

Posted on: 22/Oct/2025 9:20:19 AM

With the northeast monsoon intensifying across Tamil Nadu, heavy rainfall is being reported in several districts. As a result, the water inflow into major reservoirs has increased significantly - particularly in the Chembarambakkam Lake, one of the key drinking water sources for Chennai.

According to official reports, the inflow into Chembarambakkam Lake has risen from 1,800 cubic feet per second (cusecs) yesterday to 2,170 cusecs today. The water level, which was recorded at 20.84 feet, continues to rise steadily. The full capacity of the lake is 24 feet.

Currently, the lake holds about 2.8 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of water out of its total capacity of 3.64 TMC. To maintain safety levels and prevent overflow, authorities have begun releasing 100 cusecs of surplus water per second from the lake.

Key Source of Water for Chennai

Chembarambakkam Lake serves as a primary drinking water source for several key areas in southern and central Chennai, including:
Ambattur, Anna Nagar, Teynampet, Kodambakkam, Guindy, Adyar, Velachery, Valasaravakkam, and Alandur.

Additionally, municipalities, industrial estates, and residential suburbs surrounding Chennai also depend on the Chembarambakkam reservoir for their water supply.

Officials are closely monitoring the inflow and water level amid continued rainfall, ensuring that necessary precautionary measures are taken to manage the inflow and prevent flooding in nearby areas.
