The city of Chennai has been providing high quality education and medical care and many people come to Chennai for these are well known. The latest news is on Monday, 13th August 2018, ministry of housing and urban affairs the released Ease of Living 2018 rankings and Chennai city bettered other metros in education and medical care. Chennai is next to the city of Mumbai in the medical or health sector. Chennai scored 17.78 out of 25 in the social sector. In education and in health Chennai scored 4.6 out of 6.25 and 4.43 out of 6.25 respectively.
As the basis for rankings as many as 6 educational indicators such as percentage of male school-aged population enrolled in schools, percentage of female school-aged population enrolled in schools, primary education student- teacher ratio, percentage of schools with access to digital education plus other indicators like percentage of students completing primary education and percentage of students completing secondary education were taken into consideration. Mr. Martin Kennedy, state president of TN Private Schools Association, spoke about how in enrolment numbers RTE admissions had an important role. One important piece of information is Chennai had the highest number of RTE applications in the state and it received as many as 7541 applications.
Mr. Martin Kennedy later spoke about how the state saw record of above 1.26lakh applications in this year. He heaped praises on the infrastructure, teaching standards and methodology at the schools. To promote enrolment across districts there were many campaigns. Corporation school did superbly in the last academic year in promoting enrolment by means of rallies to raise awareness regarding free facilities. In 2015-16, as many as 77209 students enrolled and in 2016-17 as many as 76869 students enrolled.
The four parameters that were considered in the health sector were the number of doctors, hospital beds, incidences of vector borne infections and incidences of water borne infections. Ten doctors for every 10000 people are stipulated by World Health Organisation and Chennai has got as many as 18 doctors for 10000 people. The state of Tamil Nadu must feel proud that it has got 22 state run medical colleges and that is the highest in India. There are also equal numbers of private medical colleges and the state of TN produces 5000 doctors every year.
Against the country wide average of 1 bed per 1000 population, the Chennai city has got 2.5 beds per 1000 population. According to a hospital consultant, the present hospitals continue to expand by adding more beds or by opening new hospital branches.
According to the state health minister Mr. C. Vijaya Baskar, for mental health, trauma and emergency care the government is planning to increase the number of beds. He later highlighted about partnering with NGOs and tapping CSR funds from corporate for health infrastructure and expansion.
