Tamil Nadu to Experience Above-Normal Heat Until July 23, Says Weather Department

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has forecast that above-normal temperatures will persist across Tamil Nadu until July 23.

According to the weather department, the southwest monsoon has remained below normal this year due to the El Niño phenomenon, resulting in prolonged hot weather across the state. During the past week, temperatures in several parts of Tamil Nadu were recorded up to 4°C above normal.

Although the intensity of the heat has eased slightly over the last few days, several locations, including Madurai Airport, Madurai City, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Palayamkottai, and Tiruchirappalli, recorded temperatures exceeding 100°F on Sunday. Meanwhile, light rainfall was reported in a few isolated parts of the state.

The RMC also stated that a weak trough in the lower levels of the atmosphere persists over the North Tamil Nadu coastal region. As a result, isolated places across Tamil Nadu are likely to receive light rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds with speeds of 40–50 kmph until July 23.

The weather department further noted that maximum temperatures in the coastal districts are expected to remain close to normal, while interior and other parts of Tamil Nadu may continue to experience temperatures 2–3°C above the seasonal average through July 23.

For Chennai and its suburbs, the sky is expected to remain partly cloudy today, with light rain likely in a few areas.

Maximum Temperature: 37–38°C

Minimum Temperature: 27–28°C

Residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during peak afternoon hours, and remain cautious of sudden thunderstorms and strong winds.
