Aadi Amavasya 2026: Date, Significance & Rituals

Aadi Amavasya is one of the most important days for worshipping ancestors in Tamil tradition. It is believed that on this day, ancestors bless their descendants, and performing Tarpanam and Pitru Pooja helps remove Pitru Dosha, bringing peace, prosperity, and family well-being.

Since it is the first Amavasya during Dakshinayana, it is considered highly auspicious. Devotees visit sacred places such as Rameswaram, Tiruchendur, Trichy Amma Mandapam, and Erode Kooduthurai to perform ancestral rituals.

Charity, feeding the poor, offering food to crows, lighting lamps for ancestors, and worshipping Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are considered highly beneficial on this day. Those unable to visit temples can perform simple Tarpanam at home by offering water and sesame seeds with sincere prayers.
