Tamil Nadu: Over 100 Government Arts and Science Colleges to Get Regular Principals

More than 100 Government Arts and Science Colleges in Tamil Nadu are set to get regular principals, as the State Higher Education Department has initiated steps to fill long-pending vacancies.

Tamil Nadu has 181 Government Arts and Science Colleges and seven Government Colleges of Education. Of these, more than 125 institutions have reportedly been functioning without regular principals.

For several years, senior professors have been holding additional charge as principals due to delays in regular appointments.

Principal Vacancies Affect College Administration

The prolonged vacancies have affected academic and administrative functioning in several government colleges across Tamil Nadu.

Without regular principals, important decisions related to college administration and academic activities have faced delays, highlighting the need to fill the leadership positions.

The latest move by the Higher Education Department is expected to address a significant number of these vacancies.

Madras High Court Order Paves Way for Promotions

The appointment process gained momentum after the Madras High Court vacated a stay in cases concerning the seniority of professors.

The development cleared the way for the Higher Education Department to proceed with promotions and appointments to principal posts.

129 Associate Professors Promoted as Grade II Principals

The Tamil Nadu Higher Education Department has issued a Government Order approving the promotion of 129 Associate Professors as Grade II Principals.

The promoted Associate Professors are expected to be called for counselling, during which they will be able to choose their postings.

Once the counselling and posting process is completed, more than 100 Government Arts and Science Colleges in Tamil Nadu are expected to have regular principals.

The appointments are expected to address long-standing leadership vacancies and strengthen academic and administrative functioning in government colleges across the State.
