Celebrate the Spirit of Onam with an Authentic Feast at Southern Spice, Taj Coromandel, Chennai

The fragrances and flavours of the harvest festival of Onam are back! A time-honoured celebration of abundance, gratitude and togetherness, Onam brings families and friends together over the iconic Onasadya - an elaborate feast served traditionally on a banana leaf. This festive season, Southern Spice, the award-winning iconic South Indian restaurant at Taj Coromandel, Chennai invites guests to savour the timeless culinary traditions of Kerala with a meticulously curated Onam Thali that captures the authentic flavours, cherished customs and festive spirit of the season.

Prepared using traditional recipes and the freshest seasonal ingredients, the specially crafted vegetarian feast begins with refreshing Ona Sambharam, a spiced buttermilk infused with ginger, green chilli and curry leaves. Guests can then savour an assortment of traditional accompaniments including the sweet, tangy and spicy Injipuli; the tangy and flavourful Manga Uppilittathu (pickled raw mango); Naranga Oorugai, a zesty lemon pickle bursting with bold, spicy flavours; cooling Chuvanna Beetroot Pachadi and Vellarikka Thayir Kichadi; freshly ground Thenga Chammanthi; and roasted lentil spice powder, Paruppu Podi Thool, served with rice and ghee.

The heart of the feast is a sumptuous selection of traditional Kerala delicacies that celebrate the region`s rich culinary heritage. Guests can relish classics such as Avial, a medley of country vegetables cooked with coconut and cumin; Mathanga Payar Erissery, featuring red pumpkin and beans; Cheera Thoran, where spinach is tossed with freshly grated coconut; Achinga Mezhukkupuratti, long beans gently sautéed with onions, garlic and coconut oil; Ulli Theeyal, shallots simmered in a roasted coconut and coriander curry; Pachakkaya Kalan, raw banana in tempered yoghurt with coconut and crushed pepper; Kumbalanga Olan, white pumpkin and black-eyed peas cooked in delicate coconut milk; Kootu Curry, a comforting preparation of yam and black chickpeas; and the much-loved Pineapple Pulissery, where sweet pineapple is simmered in a tangy yoghurt and coconut curry. The feast is complemented with traditional Matta rice, steamed Ponni rice, sambar, rasam, parippu curry and ghee, completing an authentic Kerala festive experience.

No Onam celebration is complete without its traditional desserts. Guests can conclude the feast with Ada Pradhaman, made with rice ada, jaggery and coconut milk; the comforting Paruppu Payasam, a rich lentil and jaggery pudding; Alli Pidi, a slow-cooked rice pudding; and the naturally sweet Njaalipoovan banana, bringing the festive meal to a satisfying close.
