Chennai Weather: Rain and Thunderstorms Expected Across Tamil Nadu

After a week of hot and dry weather, Chennai and neighbouring areas, along with more than 20 districts across Tamil Nadu, are expected to receive moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph at isolated places on Friday.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast heavy rain at isolated places in the Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts on Friday.

According to the weather bulletin, a trough extending from a cyclonic circulation over Marathwada and its neighbouring areas to the Gulf of Mannar, passing across Interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu at 0.9 km above mean sea level, is responsible for the expected rainfall across the state.

Moderate rain, along with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph at isolated places, is likely in the Western Ghats districts, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupattur, Salem, Tiruppur, Erode, Dharmapuri, Namakkal, Madurai, Sivaganga, Krishnagiri, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Karur, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Pudukkottai. Puducherry and Karaikal are also expected to receive rain.

Heavy Rain Forecast for September 19 and 20

On September 19, heavy rain is likely at isolated places in the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Vellore, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Tirupattur, Ranipet, Tiruvallur, Kallakurichi and Salem districts.

The heavy rain spell is expected to continue on September 20, with isolated heavy rainfall forecast for the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Dindigul, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Tiruchirappalli, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Madurai, Villupuram and Kallakurichi districts.

Chennai Weather Forecast

In Chennai, light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely in some areas, particularly during the evening or night on Friday.

The maximum temperature in the city is expected to remain around 37°C, while the minimum temperature is likely to be around 26°C.

Maximum temperatures across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are expected to remain near normal until September 21.

On September 22 and 23, moderate rain with thunderstorms and gusty winds of 40–50 kmph at isolated places is likely to continue over the Western Ghats districts, North Coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.
