The Tamil Nadu government has amended the Common Building Rules to make it mandatory for residential apartments and commercial complexes to include electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities.
As EV production and usage rise across India, Tamil Nadu has seen growing adoption of electric cars, bikes, and buses as an alternative to petrol and diesel vehicles.
According to the new rules:
- Apartment complexes with 8 or more housing units or those covering over 8,072 sq. ft must provide EV charging points for cars and two-wheelers.
- Complexes with 50 or more houses must also include fast-charging facilities accessible to visitors.
- Commercial and industrial buildings larger than 3,229 sq. ft must allocate 10% of their parking space for EV charging stations.
The amendments have been officially published in the Tamil Nadu Government Gazette, ensuring standardized guidelines for EV infrastructure across the state.
