Velachery residents can now heave a sigh of relief regarding the construction of a flyover that has been long pending.

The news is that by the end of the month of October preliminary works for the long pending Velachery main road flyover would begin. The GCC would be issuing work orders to the contractor next week. The officials have made it clear that full scale work would start from January 2026.

This flyover would be present from Five Furlong Road Junction to Guru Nanak College in Velachery for about 3000 m and it would be a 3 lane flyover. This flyover would be easing the heavy traffic congestion in this locality in Chennai.

This flyover would be constructed at a cost of rs 310 cr and it would have additional access ramps of width of 11m. The superb piece of information is that the flyover would provide smoother travel for the motorists navigating heavy traffic congestion during peak hours near Phoenix Market City, Velachery Bypass Road Junction and Racecourse Road etc.

It was brought to light by the chief engineer, Bridges, Mr. Shankaravelan that GCC has been speeding up the preliminary works like soil testing, approval of designs etc within 3 to 4 months. He added that the contractors have been asked to obtain design clearance from IIT-M within 3 months for the work to begin by January 2026.

Covering 3 major intersections, the flyover would start about 300m after Sardar Patel- Velachery Main Road Junction and it would end at Velachery bypass. For this flyover project, about 191sqm of private lands and about 461sqm of govt lands would be acquired. About 2lakhs commuters in the Velachery- Guindy corridor would be benefited by this flyover. This is one of the most traffic prone zones in Chennai is a well known fact.

As per the secretary of Tansi Nagar Residents Welfare Association Mr. M. Balakrishnan, flyover was the only solution to ease traffic congestion in Velachery. He spoke about how the GCC authorities must ensure that the construction work gets completed on time without delays.
