Okkiyam Maduvu Bridge Expansion Works Progressing Steadily: CMRL MD Inspects Site

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is making steady progress on the expansion of the Okkiyam Maduvu Bridge, aimed at improving flood resilience and enhancing water flow in the Pallikaranai marsh region.

On Tuesday, Thiru. M.A. Siddique, I.A.S., Managing Director (CMRL), inspected the site along with Thiru. T. Archunan, Director (Projects), Thiru. C. Selvam, General Manager (Tracks) and other senior officials.

The existing bridge, with a restricted 90m waterway and low vertical clearance, was unable to handle floodwaters during Cyclone Michaung in December 2023. Based on consultations with the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Water Resources Department, CMRL is constructing a new bridge with an expanded waterway of 205m and an additional 1.5m vertical clearance.

Work Progress So Far:

- Steel bridge fabrication and deck slab casting for three 40m spans have been completed on both upstream and downstream sides.
- With the current stage, the bridge now offers a 120m waterway, an improvement from the earlier 90m.
- Two more spans will expand the total width to 205m.
- The upstream side is fully cleared, while 80% of the downstream waterway has been cleared. The final section will be cleared by September 8–10, 2025.

Next Steps:

- Works on approach spans on both sides are in progress.
- Once completed, the bridge will be linked to the existing road network for public use.

Speaking during the inspection, Thiru. M.A. Siddique said:

“We are working round the clock to ensure the Okkiyam Maduvu waterway is completed ahead of schedule and ready for the monsoon season. Once finished, the new bridge will significantly improve water flow, reduce flood risks, and provide long-term relief to residents of Pallikaranai and surrounding neighborhoods.”

CMRL has assured that the new bridge will be ready before the next monsoon, ensuring the Okkiyam Maduvu waterway can effectively handle future heavy rainfall.
