UPI and NEFT Transactions: When Can You Receive an Income Tax Notice?

With the growing use of digital payments, people regularly transfer money through UPI, NEFT, RTGS and IMPS. But does making frequent or high-value digital transactions attract an Income Tax notice? The key factor is not simply how much money you transfer, but whether you can explain the source of the money and have properly reported it in your income tax return.

According to tax experts, there is generally no issue with making large digital transactions if the source of the funds is legitimate and properly documented. The income or transaction should also be correctly disclosed in your ITR.

When Can Digital Transactions Become an Issue?

If a large amount suddenly enters your bank account, the Income Tax Department may seek an explanation about its source. If the amount has already been reported as business income, investment income or another legitimate source in your ITR, there is generally no concern. Problems can arise when the source cannot be properly explained or the income has not been disclosed.

Large payments made through NEFT or RTGS for purchasing property such as a house or land may also require you to establish the source of the funds.

Similarly, information about investments and profits from the stock market can be reported to the Income Tax Department by financial institutions. If such income is not disclosed in your ITR, you may be asked to provide an explanation.

Banks and other financial institutions also report certain transaction details to the tax authorities. These details can appear in your Annual Information Statement (AIS) and Form 26AS.

For business owners, the tax authorities may compare bank transactions with GST returns, TDS information and other financial records to identify discrepancies.

How to Avoid Tax Notices

Before filing your ITR, check your AIS and Form 26AS carefully and make sure the information matches your financial records. If you find any errors, get them corrected before filing your return.

Most importantly, disclose all applicable income and investment gains accurately in your ITR. Keeping proper records and being transparent about the source of your funds can help you avoid unnecessary tax-related complications.
