A major infrastructure boost is set to benefit passengers traveling from Tamil Nadu to New Delhi, as the third railway line between Vijayawada and Gudur in Andhra Pradesh is now ready for operations. According to railway officials, this new line will cut the travel time of Chennai–Delhi express trains by nearly 30 minutes and significantly reduce delays across the route.
Key Route for South–North India Connections
Every day, more than eight major express and superfast trains operate from Chennai and other cities in Tamil Nadu toward New Delhi. Some of the most popular among them include:
- Tamil Nadu Express
- GT Express
- Duronto Express
- Rajdhani Express
These trains currently run through sections that have only double lines, causing congestion, especially in busy stretches between Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
Third Line Completed on the 292 km Vijayawada–Gudur Section
The Vijayawada–Gudur corridor is one of the most crucial rail links connecting South India to the national capital. The newly completed 292 km third line is expected to open for train traffic in the coming weeks. This upgrade is part of Indian Railways’ ongoing effort to improve capacity and ensure smoother operations on high-density routes.
Benefits to Passengers
- Once the third line becomes operational:
- Travel time on the Chennai–Delhi route will reduce by up to 30 minutes
- Train delays caused by congestion will be minimized
- Faster and more reliable connections will be established
- South–North India rail traffic will improve significantly
- Part of a Larger Railway Modernization Plan
Railway authorities are currently implementing multiple third-line and fourth-line projects across India to handle rising passenger demand. The Vijayawada–Gudur third line is one of the most important among these projects, as it enhances the efficiency of trains linking Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and northern states.
With this development, long-distance travel from Tamil Nadu to Delhi is expected to become faster, smoother, and more punctual.
