Highlights from Greater Chennai Corporations Budget

  • Teachers who achieve 100% pass percentage will receive an incentive of Rs 3,000, up from Rs 1,500 in the previous year.
  • Rs 50 lakh has been allocated to provide music instruments for 20 Chennai Corporation schools.
  • Science lab infrastructure will be developed step by step in Chennai Corporation schools, starting with an allocation of Rs 2 crore for 10 higher secondary schools in the first phase.
  • Snacks will be provided to higher and higher secondary students in evening schools and remedial schools until exams, with an allocation of Rs 1 crore for this scheme.
  • The prize amount for students who score centum in Class 12 board exams will be increased from Rs 1,000 to Rs 10,000, with an allocation of Rs 10 lakh.
  • Special classes will be conducted for students from Classes 6 to 8 who need extra attention under the Nan Mudhalavan scheme.
  • Six new vehicles will be allocated to catch stray dogs, costing Rs 60 lakh, and Rs 1.35 crore will be allocated for five vehicles to catch stray cattle.
  • All vector larvae control workers will be provided with a `vector control kit` worth Rs 35 lakh to control vector reproductions.
  • Automatic bells will be installed in all Chennai Corporation schools at an estimated cost of Rs 27.17 lakhs.
  • Specially-designed uniforms worth Rs 3.25 crore will be provided for 10,002 sanitation workers who work at night in Zones 4 to 8.
  • Solid waste management activities will be monitored, and the best three wards in each zone will be awarded every year to promote competitiveness among wards to keep the city clean and hygienic.
  • A total of 452 bus route roads and interior roads will be relaid for a length of 78.01 km at an estimated cost of Rs 55.61 crore under the Singara Chennai 2.0 project. Rs 149.55 crore will be allocated under TURIF to relay 1335 bus route and interior roads, and 2,687 BRR and interior roads will be relaid at a total cost of Rs 327.63 crore under the NSMT project.
  • An integrated stormwater drain project in Kosasthalaiyar river basin in zones 1, 2, 3, 6, and 7 will be funded by the Asian Development Bank with Rs 1,000 crore in the 2023-24 financial year. The project will be separated into 46 packets, and the stormwater drain will be constructed rapidly.
  • 584 Corporation parks will be maintained with high standards at low cost, with maintenance work carried out by contractors, and Rs 48 crore will be allocated for this scheme.
  • Rs 10 crore will be allocated to maintain 35 commercial complexes and 63 community welfare centres under Chennai Corporation in 2023-24.
  • CCTV cameras will be installed in Marina beach, Anna Nagar Tower park, Cooum river basin, Adyar river basin, and BOV stations, with Rs 2.20 crore allocated for the installation.
  • Medical equipment worth Rs 75 lakh will be procured for the Chennai Corporation Child Care Centre in Puzhal Zone 4.
  • Ward Councillors` development fund has been increased from Rs 35 lakh to Rs 40 lakh.
