Chennai Metro Invites Tender for Painting Works at 11 Elevated Phase I Stations

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has invited tenders for internal and external painting works at 11 elevated Metro stations along its Phase I corridor as part of an initiative to enhance the appearance of Metro premises. The project is estimated to cost ₹6.41 crore.

The stations included in the first phase of the beautification project are Koyambedu, Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT), Arumbakkam, Vadapalani, Ashok Nagar, St. Thomas Mount, Airport, Meenambakkam, Nanganallur Road, Guindy, and Little Mount.

According to a CMRL official, the painting works are being carried out in a phased manner. The initial phase covers these 11 stations, while the remaining elevated stations will be taken up in subsequent phases.

Call for Action Against Posters on Metro Infrastructure

Commenting on the initiative, V. Padmanaban, a travel enthusiast from Ekattuthangal, welcomed the beautification works but urged CMRL to take stricter action against unauthorized posters pasted on Metro pillars and barricades, particularly by political parties.

He suggested that CMRL impose penalties on those responsible and extend the beautification programme to Metro pillars and other elevated structures to maintain a cleaner urban environment.

Semi-Naming of Nine Metro Stations Planned

Meanwhile, CMRL is also set to begin the semi-naming of nine Metro stations along the Phase I Extension of Corridor 1. Under the proposed branding initiative, selected stations will receive a prefix or suffix to their existing names as part of the naming rights contract.

The stations identified for semi-naming are:

New Washermanpet
Thiyagaraya College
Tondiarpet
Tollgate
Wimco Nagar
Wimco Nagar Depot
Thiruvottiyur
Thiruvottiyur Theradi
Kaladipet

The initiative is expected to improve station branding while generating additional non-fare revenue for Chennai Metro.
