Tamil Nadu Weather Update: Heavy Rain Alert Issued for 15 Districts

The Chennai Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain alert for 15 districts in Tamil Nadu due to multiple atmospheric circulations and low-pressure trough systems active across South India.

According to weather officials, atmospheric circulations over the Kanyakumari Sea, Gulf of Mannar, interior Karnataka and northeast Tamil Nadu are expected to trigger thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds along with heavy rainfall in several districts today.

Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and winds up to 50 kmph is likely in:

- Nilgiris
- Coimbatore
- Tiruppur
- Theni
- Dindigul
- Madurai
- Sivaganga
- Pudukottai
- Tiruchirappalli
- Karur
- Erode
- Salem
- Namakkal
- Dharmapuri
- Krishnagiri

Ariyalur Receives Highest Rainfall

Several places across Tamil Nadu recorded rainfall on Sunday, with Ariyalur receiving the highest rainfall of 70 mm.

Temperature Update

Despite the rain activity, maximum temperatures across many parts of Tamil Nadu remained 3 to 6 degrees Celsius above normal. Vellore recorded temperatures close to 100°F.

Chennai Weather Forecast

Weather officials stated that Chennai will witness generally cloudy skies today. Some parts of the city may receive light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms.

Southwest Monsoon Expected Soon

The southwest monsoon is expected to begin over Kerala from May 26, which could further improve rainfall activity across southern states.

Fishermen Warning Issued

Strong winds ranging from 50 to 60 kmph are expected along Tamil Nadu coastal regions, the Gulf of Mannar and nearby sea areas. Similar wind conditions are also likely over the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea regions. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until weather conditions improve.
