Tamil Nadu Election Rules After Campaign Ends: Key Restrictions from April 21, 6 PM

Ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026, the Chief Electoral Officer has announced a set of strict rules that will come into force once campaigning ends on April 21 at 6 PM.

The polling will be held on April 23 from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and under the Representation of the People Act, 1951 (Section 126), several restrictions will be enforced during this silent period.

Key Election Rules After Campaign Ends:

- No public meetings or rallies related to elections can be organized or attended

- No election campaigning through media, including TV, radio, social media (WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter), SMS, or internet platforms

- No entertainment events such as music shows, cinema screenings, or public programs aimed at influencing voters

- Violations can lead to up to 2 years imprisonment, fine, or both

Movement Restrictions:

- Political party workers and outsiders brought into constituencies must leave by April 21, 6 PM

- Authorities will monitor lodges, guest houses, and community halls for unauthorized stay

Vehicle Restrictions:

- Campaign vehicle permissions, including those for star campaigners, become invalid after April 21, 6 PM

On polling day, each candidate is allowed:

- One personal vehicle
- One vehicle for election agent
- One vehicle for staff
- Transporting voters using vehicles is strictly prohibited and punishable under election laws

Polling Booth Guidelines:

- Election offices can be set up only beyond 100 meters from polling stations

- Only two persons are allowed inside such offices to avoid crowding
