Tamil Nadu Weather: Heavy Rain Alert for Nilgiris, Coimbatore and Theni; Chennai May Get Light Rain

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has forecast moderate rainfall in parts of the Western Ghats districts over the next two days, while heavy rain is expected in the Nilgiris from July 30. Coimbatore and Theni are also likely to receive heavy rainfall on July 31 and August 1.

Meanwhile, Chennai and its suburbs may experience light rain with thunderstorms on July 28 and 29.

Tamil Nadu Rain Forecast

According to the weather department, a weak trough is prevailing in the lower atmospheric levels over the Tamil Nadu coastal region.

On July 28 and 29, moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds of around 40–50 kmph is likely at isolated places in the Western Ghats districts. Light thunderstorms and rain may occur at isolated locations across the rest of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.

On July 30, isolated heavy rain is likely in the Nilgiris, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds. Moderate rainfall is expected at isolated places in other Western Ghats districts.

On July 31 and August 1, isolated heavy rainfall is forecast in Coimbatore, Nilgiris and Theni districts. Moderate rain may continue in parts of the Western Ghats, while isolated light rain is possible elsewhere in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.

For August 2 and 3, moderate rainfall is expected at isolated places in the Western Ghats districts, with light rain possible across other parts of Tamil Nadu.

Chennai Weather Forecast

Chennai and its suburbs are expected to remain partly cloudy on July 28 and 29, with thunderstorms and light rain possible in some areas.

The maximum temperature is likely to remain around 38–39°C, while the minimum temperature could range between 29°C and 30°C.

Across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, maximum temperatures may remain 2–4°C above normal at a few places until July 31. Temperatures are expected to be close to normal on August 1.

Fishermen Advisory

Strong winds are forecast over several coastal and sea areas during the period.

On July 28, squally winds reaching 45–55 kmph and occasionally 65 kmph are likely along the Tamil Nadu coast, Gulf of Mannar and adjoining Comorin Sea.

Similar conditions are expected over parts of the south Tamil Nadu coast, Gulf of Mannar and Comorin Sea on July 30, July 31 and August 1.

Strong winds are also forecast over parts of the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea on specified days. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the affected sea areas during the warning period.
